OUGD406 - Studio Brief 3 - Book Cover Exhibition - Research & Ideas

Group 8

Myself, Emily Fieldhouse, Nathan Laville & Richelle Hew

Research:

We started off straight away by visiting Leeds Central Library for inspiration, and also in order to view potential exhibition spaces for inspiration, as we weren't told which specific area was going to be allocated to the exhibition. Getting to grips with the location, size, layout and design of the spaces helped influence and determine what things we would need to consider with the design treatment for the branding of this exhibition.

We also decided on a target audience, being design students (around 16+) and professionals as we felt that the exhibition would most definitely not appeal to a much younger audience.

Concept:

We all felt that within the adjacent space, the first noticeable thing was in fact the ceiling, and the consistency of the different coloured circles attached to it. And collectively decided that to base the branding around circles, and also something as identifiable as the circles within the adjacent space in Leeds Central Library, may benefit us when creating something that people would recognise if they'd visited the library before.

For the time being we also decided to name the exhibition '#coverupleeds', obviously representing the covering up of old and dated books, with a fresh front cover redesign. The hashtag was included as a way to make the exhibition identifiable on social media.

For inspiration regarding layouts, colour choices etc we gathered many examples of primary research that we found in book shops and billboards around Leeds:

Banner outside Leeds Central Library &
Advertisement posters inside the library

Promotional posters around Leeds

Bookmarks found in WHSmith and Waterstones

Banner & Posters advertising books in Waterstones

Badges from LCA & Booklets that we collected

Inspiration for design choices:

We decided to look into existing publications that had circle based influences within the design, and also for further inspiration regarding layout & colour choices.
