100 - 20,20,20,20,20. (OUGD405)

I then went on to research photography and peoples opinions on what they believed about photography in general. Here is what I found out.

20 FACTS

1-              We snap as many photos every two minutes as humanity as a whole did in the 1800s.2-             In a survey undertaken last year, 76 per cent of people from Britain were seen to be drunk in photos in which they were tagged.3-             Which is your best side? Your left? A study by Kelsey Blackburn and James Schriillo from Wake Forest University found that the left side of peoples’ faces are perceived and rates as more aesthetically pleasing than the right.
4-              The most expensive camera ever sold was a rare 1923 Leica camera, which went for $2.8 million at auction in Vienna.5-              There are 250 million photos uploaded to Facebook daily. Instagram trails behind with around 40 million mobile uploads a day.6-              The total number of photos on Facebook is 10,000 times more than the total number of photos in the U.S. Library of Congress, which document U.S. history since the beginning of time.7-              It’s estimates that on a whole, humans have taken over 3.8 TRILLION photos
8-        The oldest known photo with a person in the shot shows a man in Paris getting his shoes shined.9-              In 2012, 37% of the images in the US were captured using camera phones, but by 2015, that number is expected to be 50%.10-           Before the digital age, the US government was taking spy photographs of the Soviet Union.
11-       There are 12 Hasselblad cameras on the surface of the moon. They were left there after the moon landings to allow for the extra weight of the lunar rock samples to be brought back.12-        One of the first photographers of cats in amusing poses was English photographer Harry Pointer during the 1870s.
13-       If you’re photographing in space you might have some difficulty getting sharp images due to vibrations induced by fans, jet firings, and other machinery.14-        Back in 1990, Kodak used cuddly collectible toys to promote their brand in the effort to get kids into photography. They toys were called Kolorkins.15-        George Eastman, founder of Kodak, had a particular fondness for the letter ‘K’. He reportedly said, “It seems a strong, incisive sort of letter.” He came up with the name ‘Kodak’ for his company along with help from his mother.
16-       Though the first successful picture was developed in 1827 by NiĆ©pce, it took 8 hours to expose.
17-        The first box camera was produced by George Eastman in 1886, but it was way too costly. Two years later, in 1888, four years after he created the first flexible film, the first Kodak box camera hit the streets. It was an instant success.
18-        James Clerk Maxwell began working with color in 1860, by taking three exposures, each one with a different color filter (red, green, blue), and then projecting the three images using three lanterns with the corresponding filters.
19-        Due to the amount of time it took to expose the picture, the subject couldn’t move or smile or blink or the portrait would come out blurry.20-        The largest collection of cameras in the world is held by Dilish Parekh of Mumbai, India. He has a collection of 4,425 antique cameras which he has been collecting since 1977.

20 OPINIONS

Hey, just a quick question. Do you guys think that photography is becoming less meaningful? Are there too many accessories that hinder the meaning of photography. (such as selfie sticks).

Becky Silveira i think photography isn't becoming less meaningful, but that it is becoming easier for every day people to take good quality photographs that look similar to professional ones. the photos people take are still meaningful but more common i guess

Hattie Windley Yes definitely! Nothing beats a family photo album full of printed pictures from film. People don't appreciate how photographs are supposed to immortalise a point in time to look back on and reminisce.

Charlotte Rose Walker i think seflie sticks are brill and useful i want one

Cameron James Wolfe yes, I hate selfie sticks!

Lo Wilcock Nah I think selfies are fun, and photos with friends that aren't professional are sometimes more meaningful than shitty posed photos but that's just my opinion! I just think there's more opportunities and different ways to capture a moment now.

Cameron James Wolfe I agree with lo but I think photography is too easily accessible nowadays and everyone thinks they're a photographer

Ellie palmer – personally I think its become more meaningful as I’ve grown up because seeing all these beautiful pictures online of places people travel to just reminds me how amazing the small things really are. However, maybe it is too easy to access but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Thomas Gajkowski -  photography is becoming more skilful and original photography is being squeezed because of programs like Photoshop and social media like Instagram. It is difficult to say what is really real or what has been artificially changed.  It is becoming a lot more accessible due to Google and mobile cameras.

Josh Tupper – Still meaningful and arguably more due to the introduction of social media. Yes it is more accessible but I wouldn’t say its easy to use.

Jess Harris – Yes it is less meaningful because of the amount of access that people have to it. Anyone can share on social medias and anyone can edit the pictures therefore we do not know what is real and what is fake. Photographers are getting less recognition for their work because anyone can do it.

Jake Barlow – Partly, I mean the advancement in high definition technology makes it easier to access however its down to the photographer and his skill to capture the image and show their talent.

Lauren Farnden – No, the fact people even take photos is to have them for memeries and you can share your happiness and experiences with friends and family that weren’t there at the time.

Elliot Jennings – I think photography is an art in itself and shows off the beauty of the world. However, I believe the improvement in day to day technology whilst expanding the discipline also reduces its level of quality.

Milan Ozegovic – Yes nowadays we have so many cameras and almost everyone has some sort of camera so photography is common unlike back in the day when not a lot of people had cameras so any sort of photography would be seen as a memory and something more rare. But I still think its such a meaningful way of communication as everyone can relate to it.

Sam Khalati – I think its becoming more common because more people have access to it and therefore making it less meaningful.

Umar Aslam – I think its more meaningful because we can save more images and look back at them on a wider spread. Social media like Facebook use a timeline therefore we can access that timeline in a further date and remember the times we had during those years.

Natasha Rushton – I would say artistic photography hasn’t lost any significance due to contemporary art moving at such a fast pace but generally photography is becoming more meaningful due to technical advances.

Jacob McDermott – I think photography is becoming less meaningful because when we were younger we would appreciate the pictures being taken so that they would be kept for memory.  Nowadays everyone takes pictures of everything and it has lost its importance.

Nathan Pershad –  Photography is becoming less meaningful because we don’t appreciate it anymore. We are going to be the last generation that have our baby photos taken with an old camera that would have to be printed.

Jamie Rippon – Its become less meaningful but still has significance. It is also very easy to access.
