Studio Brief 3 - Digital book link (OUGD405)

I created a digital book because I did not have enough time to produce a book and did not want to rush it because I do not want to produce something that I am not happy with.

This is my link: http://issuu.com/danielthomascarter/docs/booklet1/1

Studio Brief 04 - Final outcome (OUGD405)

For my final outcome I have created an app and a logo that would be used within the company PictureThePrint.
I designed these logos to be used for the icon to be used for printing as well as the logo.

Main page. The original was a light green colour however, it was changed after my final crit I was suggested to have a consistent colour throughout my apps so that it could work as one, I have therefore changed it all to black and I believe it looks more professional and like an actually app.

I am fairly satisfied with my final outcome because it is an app that could be potentially used to help people remember their memories. I myself would like an app like this because I use an iphone and it is awful and hard to use and isn't very compatible when it comes to printing a folder.

idea generation - creating an app (OUGD405)

"I wanted to rebrand a shop that isn't very recognisable in Leeds and make it more personal to the buyer and make something that would help us remind ourselves of the past that weve had."

I decided to create an app that would help everyone organise their old photos into folders in order to help you remember the past. I think we take too many photos at this time and this is seen on social medias such as facebook and others. I want to create something that would be used within PictureThePrint and would help people understand the importance of remembering something old and having something physical such as a developed photo.

Here is an idea that I generated.

I made several folders that you can add together to make one massive file that could then be sent over to the PictureThePrint company and could be developed into various photos or other materials that could help remind you of your past instead of uploading it to the social media. Although I did make a button to 'share' to the social media to try help promote this idea. I did however, intentionally remove the idea of filters because I believe that filters hide the 'mistakes' that are generated using cameras and this makes a photography a photo in my opinion.

Studio Brief 04 rebranding a local shop + research (OUGD405)

For studio brief 4 I was given a week to try come up with an idea that would of been generated from my research from studio brief 2 and 3. I noticed in Leeds that there are no snappysnap shops around and that there are very few local shops that develop cameras.

I wanted to rebrand a local shop that I found called Picturetheprint. I then decided to email the owner and ask him what he would change and whether it would be ok to rebrand his shop. After finding out a little about him and his shop I decided that the logo wasn't showing what his company does which is develop and print. I wanted to enhance this shop and make it more memorable and decided to create an app that would help people sort their images and photographs out and then be able to print on various different materials such as t-shirts, mugs and many more.

I also noticed that a lot of apps today have a lot of filters and I believe this hides photography and this makes photos look more unrealistic and fake. We as viewers are also unsure whether that is the original photo or whether it has been edited and I think that softwares such as photoshop hinder photography in general.

Studio brief 4 - Initial ideas (OUGD405)

I wanted to rebrand a shop that isn't very recognisable in Leeds and make it more personal to the buyer and make something that would help us remind ourselves of the past that weve had.

Here are a few notes that I took during a crit as I was unsure what I wanted to do with the rebranding.

I had to find out a problem that I noticed in Studio Brief 2/3.
My problem was that too many people aren't sure what photos are real or not and how there are less shops involving old developed cameras that remind us of memories when we were younger.
I wanted to rebrand a shop to make it more personal.

Here are a few logo ideas that I generated.

Final design booklet (OUGD405)

I wanted to make my book simple and effective. I wanted a layout that would grab your attention. I also decided against having a title because I wanted it to be more personal to the person picking it up. I wanted to force them to have to pick it up in order to see what the book is about.

I was very satisfied with my book because I was given a week to create this book and believe I could achieve a lot more if I was given a week extra. I think the book is simplistic and I think the page layout works as a whole because it educates you and I believe is quite formal but centres its attention towards the photography.
I wanted my front cover to not have a title and to have just one photograph of the images that were taken by my classmates. The reason why I used this background colour is because the images that were not developed consisted of a colour roughly like this one. I didn't want a black background because I thought it was too harsh on the eyes and wouldn't let the developed photos stand out.

I wanted to create a contents page because it is quite formal and has a lot of information inside.

I wanted give an introduction as to how I feel photography is used whilst quoting a similar view to me on the right.

I wanted to place all my facts onto one page and I didn't include all the facts because some of them weren't as interesting as the ones I chose.

I thought that having an opinion is very important and decided to do a double page spread because a lot of the answers that were given were all very different and all very valid and this is what I wanted to show throughout my book.

I think statistics are important and should be shown because they are facts and most of these statistics point out how we overuse the camera on our phones and how little of them are actually worth keeping. I also wanted to show how much of an involvement social medias have today.

I think it is important to voice the opinion of what people consider photography.

The back page is of photos that I see as having taken time to produce and create an irony between the front page which is what I am aiming to show.

Page layouts (OUGD405)

I decided to catch up on work that I missed and decided to have a look at page layouts and how they draw someones attention. I wanted to keep it minimal and bold and something that drew your attention to the book and made you want to pick it up.

Here is a page layout that I found that on google images that drew my attention because I like the use of colour on one page and how the text is all aligned and how it has a small quote on the left hand side that makes you want to find out what that quote is. I think this book is very smart because its easily legible and is eye catching.

This is another page spread that I found interesting because of the use of black and white and how the page is spread into paragraphs that makes it more readable and makes you want to find out about these two people. I also like the black and white contrast.

I think that this image is the most original and unique page. This is because of the way that the page has been layed out and how it is all aligned in columns of 2 for the first page and in columnbs of 3 in the second page. I like the use of vibrant images that stand out and the use of cut images to almost point towards the title.

Experimentation continued (OUGD405)

I then had a look through some of my old photos are compared the one thats my class took. The photos that I compared them with were photos taken before the phone had a camera and I noticed that the photos were a lot more meaningful and actually mattered. These photos are some of me when I was younger with my brother and even of my past relatives which always puts a smile on my face when looking through these images.

Here are a few that I found.

Experiment involving my class - Photography (OUGD405)

My final piece to research was photography. This is what I found most interesting and emotional to an extent. I went through old photos that I found lying around and chose 100 old photos to match the theme that were the most memorable to me of my family and friends.

I wanted to create something to engage with my viewers. I did some extra experimentation which involved my tutors and my friends from class. I gave them all 10 minutes to take my developed camera and take one image that they found interesting without me knowing. I was interested to see what people would go and do and where they might go and take a picture. Once I had developed the photos I wanted to see what people went and did and what their response was.
This is what I found very interesting because not one photo was remotely similar and some photos were actually very unique whilst others were just plain and unimaginative which helped me to understand that we don't appreciate the use of a camera and take photos of random things when given the opportunity.

Here are some of my results.

Page layout ideas for my booklet

I wanted to create some mock up page layouts that I created to try influence my final booklet. I decided to sketch up some page layouts that could potentially be used. I enjoyed this process because it made me think about how I wanted to present my book. I wanted to keep it simple and photography based.

Researching books

We were given a new brief to design a booklet bases on our research that we gathered in Studio Brief 2. I decided to look at various ways to present a booklet.

I enjoyed the simplicity of the book and how its surrounded by a lot of white space giving the book a lot of space to breath in.

I also liked this book because it looks very personal and has a variety of image sizes that vary from only having one image on one page to one image across a spread.

I like the contrast between the black and the white and how the text is quite small and how it is not the main source in the book.

Here are two booklets that I was given by Simon to have a look at which I found especially interesting. I liked how the book was almost made up of two books that work together as one. I loved the use of photography inside and how it reminded me of memories of me when I was younger.  I liked how the book was also square as its not very common and how slick it looked as two books in one.

Presentation - 100

Our task was to design a 2 minute presentation. I decided to cut mine down so it would be quite formal. I didn't want to read out all my research because then I would take more than 2 minutes to present.

100 - 20,20,20,20,20. (OUGD405)

I then went on to research photography and peoples opinions on what they believed about photography in general. Here is what I found out.

20 FACTS

1-              We snap as many photos every two minutes as humanity as a whole did in the 1800s.2-             In a survey undertaken last year, 76 per cent of people from Britain were seen to be drunk in photos in which they were tagged.3-             Which is your best side? Your left? A study by Kelsey Blackburn and James Schriillo from Wake Forest University found that the left side of peoples’ faces are perceived and rates as more aesthetically pleasing than the right.
4-              The most expensive camera ever sold was a rare 1923 Leica camera, which went for $2.8 million at auction in Vienna.5-              There are 250 million photos uploaded to Facebook daily. Instagram trails behind with around 40 million mobile uploads a day.6-              The total number of photos on Facebook is 10,000 times more than the total number of photos in the U.S. Library of Congress, which document U.S. history since the beginning of time.7-              It’s estimates that on a whole, humans have taken over 3.8 TRILLION photos
8-        The oldest known photo with a person in the shot shows a man in Paris getting his shoes shined.9-              In 2012, 37% of the images in the US were captured using camera phones, but by 2015, that number is expected to be 50%.10-           Before the digital age, the US government was taking spy photographs of the Soviet Union.
11-       There are 12 Hasselblad cameras on the surface of the moon. They were left there after the moon landings to allow for the extra weight of the lunar rock samples to be brought back.12-        One of the first photographers of cats in amusing poses was English photographer Harry Pointer during the 1870s.
13-       If you’re photographing in space you might have some difficulty getting sharp images due to vibrations induced by fans, jet firings, and other machinery.14-        Back in 1990, Kodak used cuddly collectible toys to promote their brand in the effort to get kids into photography. They toys were called Kolorkins.15-        George Eastman, founder of Kodak, had a particular fondness for the letter ‘K’. He reportedly said, “It seems a strong, incisive sort of letter.” He came up with the name ‘Kodak’ for his company along with help from his mother.
16-       Though the first successful picture was developed in 1827 by NiĆ©pce, it took 8 hours to expose.
17-        The first box camera was produced by George Eastman in 1886, but it was way too costly. Two years later, in 1888, four years after he created the first flexible film, the first Kodak box camera hit the streets. It was an instant success.
18-        James Clerk Maxwell began working with color in 1860, by taking three exposures, each one with a different color filter (red, green, blue), and then projecting the three images using three lanterns with the corresponding filters.
19-        Due to the amount of time it took to expose the picture, the subject couldn’t move or smile or blink or the portrait would come out blurry.20-        The largest collection of cameras in the world is held by Dilish Parekh of Mumbai, India. He has a collection of 4,425 antique cameras which he has been collecting since 1977.

20 OPINIONS

Hey, just a quick question. Do you guys think that photography is becoming less meaningful? Are there too many accessories that hinder the meaning of photography. (such as selfie sticks).

Becky Silveira i think photography isn't becoming less meaningful, but that it is becoming easier for every day people to take good quality photographs that look similar to professional ones. the photos people take are still meaningful but more common i guess

Hattie Windley Yes definitely! Nothing beats a family photo album full of printed pictures from film. People don't appreciate how photographs are supposed to immortalise a point in time to look back on and reminisce.

Charlotte Rose Walker i think seflie sticks are brill and useful i want one

Cameron James Wolfe yes, I hate selfie sticks!

Lo Wilcock Nah I think selfies are fun, and photos with friends that aren't professional are sometimes more meaningful than shitty posed photos but that's just my opinion! I just think there's more opportunities and different ways to capture a moment now.

Cameron James Wolfe I agree with lo but I think photography is too easily accessible nowadays and everyone thinks they're a photographer

Ellie palmer – personally I think its become more meaningful as I’ve grown up because seeing all these beautiful pictures online of places people travel to just reminds me how amazing the small things really are. However, maybe it is too easy to access but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Thomas Gajkowski -  photography is becoming more skilful and original photography is being squeezed because of programs like Photoshop and social media like Instagram. It is difficult to say what is really real or what has been artificially changed.  It is becoming a lot more accessible due to Google and mobile cameras.

Josh Tupper – Still meaningful and arguably more due to the introduction of social media. Yes it is more accessible but I wouldn’t say its easy to use.

Jess Harris – Yes it is less meaningful because of the amount of access that people have to it. Anyone can share on social medias and anyone can edit the pictures therefore we do not know what is real and what is fake. Photographers are getting less recognition for their work because anyone can do it.

Jake Barlow – Partly, I mean the advancement in high definition technology makes it easier to access however its down to the photographer and his skill to capture the image and show their talent.

Lauren Farnden – No, the fact people even take photos is to have them for memeries and you can share your happiness and experiences with friends and family that weren’t there at the time.

Elliot Jennings – I think photography is an art in itself and shows off the beauty of the world. However, I believe the improvement in day to day technology whilst expanding the discipline also reduces its level of quality.

Milan Ozegovic – Yes nowadays we have so many cameras and almost everyone has some sort of camera so photography is common unlike back in the day when not a lot of people had cameras so any sort of photography would be seen as a memory and something more rare. But I still think its such a meaningful way of communication as everyone can relate to it.

Sam Khalati – I think its becoming more common because more people have access to it and therefore making it less meaningful.

Umar Aslam – I think its more meaningful because we can save more images and look back at them on a wider spread. Social media like Facebook use a timeline therefore we can access that timeline in a further date and remember the times we had during those years.

Natasha Rushton – I would say artistic photography hasn’t lost any significance due to contemporary art moving at such a fast pace but generally photography is becoming more meaningful due to technical advances.

Jacob McDermott – I think photography is becoming less meaningful because when we were younger we would appreciate the pictures being taken so that they would be kept for memory.  Nowadays everyone takes pictures of everything and it has lost its importance.

Nathan Pershad –  Photography is becoming less meaningful because we don’t appreciate it anymore. We are going to be the last generation that have our baby photos taken with an old camera that would have to be printed.

Jamie Rippon – Its become less meaningful but still has significance. It is also very easy to access.
