OUGD406 - Secret 7 - Final Outcome

"As I peer through the window of lost time"

Here is my final piece that I was happy with because I wanted to stay away from something that is very obvious and is seen at first glance. I wanted to make the viewer think about the album and the lyrics especially. I thoroughly enjoyed this brief because it allowed me to sketch a lot and to play around with illustrator. I also enjoy designing album covers as its personal to the artist.

We also had to evidence that we have submitted our album covers to Secret 7 as it was a live brief. Here is an email that I received.

OUGD406 - Secret 7 - Further devolopment

I then decided to go back to the lyrics and try some different album cover techniques to experiment more. I decided to play around on illustrator to try replicate the lyrics "Trapped in a world thats a distorted reality." Here are a few ideas that I generated. The first 3 images were used to experiment with and to gain further development from them.

OUGD406 - Secret 7 - Development

After playing around with the initial ideas that I have sketched up. I decided to put it to work and decided to play around with the iconic image of their hair.

I then looked at their videos and how they would always use standing microphones in their concerts. I came up with the idea of using a more modern microphone to create this visual of a microphone whilst using various colours to represent the artists.

I then started playing around with colours that were used throughout Diana and The Supremes albums that could be used throughout my album covers. I started playing around

OUGD406 - Initial Ideas + Lyrics

My first instinct was to have a look at the lyrics of my chosen song which was Reflections - Diana Ross & The Supremes.
I decided to use only a selection of lyrics to help me define my problem for the album cover.

Through the mirror of my mind

Time after time
I see reflections of you and me

Reflections of

The way life used to be
Reflections of
The love you took from me

Oh, I'm all alone now

No love to shield me
Trapped in a world
That's a distorted reality

Reflects a hurt I can't control

'Cause although you're gone

As I peer through the window

Of lost time.

Here are a few of my initial ideas that I have sketched up to help me start with an idea.

For my initial ideas I wanted to replicate the silhouettes of Diana and The Supremes. Their group was iconic for their choice of wear as well as their hair. However, I then started to look more into the lyrics and how they could be used to promote a song. I wanted to create something that would represent the artists and that would be enhanced by the lyrics. I didn't want to create something that would represent loneliness but would make you think about how emotional and understanding the lyrics are.

I then created a few more sketches that were more directed at microphones because of the way the artists use the microphones as their iconic image.  I also thought about making their hair their iconic image as they all have similar hair styles that represent them as artists.

OUGD404 - Studio Brief Two - Study Task Four

We had to go to Vernon Street to learn about different book bindings. This was a workshop with Andy to help further our understanding of books and how they are bound together.

The first book we learn about was the concertina bind which was my personal favourite. This binding I thought was the most creative and something that I haven't seen before. I like the idea that it can be pulled apart to almost be like a little leaflet. It is made from sheets of paper being stuck together to create the concertina.
The second book we got taught is the saddle stitch which in my opinion would work best for my book as it is an informative book and I would intend to give this book out in events within Esports gaming for people who are not familiar with Esports.  I really like this book binding because it is simple and cheap to make. I want my book to be easily open and therefore would prefer this method of binding.

For my final book I looked at Japanese binding which in my opinion was the nicest to look at but the hardest to work with. The book in itself is very hard to read and requires two hands to hold and read which isn't ideal for someone trying to learn about what Esports gaming is.

OUGD404 - Research - Studio Brief 01

This is an example of how to divide your page into ninths. It consists of two constructions which rely on a 2:3 page ratio. This gives the type the needed height which is shown by the circle in the illustration on the left. This results ina 2:3:4:6 margin.

This is Van de Graafs guide on how Gutenberg divided his page to get margins into 2:9ths.

An example of a widow is when you have a phrase, or a selection of words on its own in a separate column to the rest of your paragraphs. This is done by playing around with the tracking and the leading.

An example of an Orphan. Is when you have one word at the start of the line. In order to remove these orphans is to either shorten your paragraph which is just lazy or to play around with the tracking which will either add a word or remove the orphan placing it on the previous line at the end of the sentence.

An example of a river is when the words form a gap which is spread throughout the paragraph creating an invisible river. This happens mostly in justified text as the text is spread out more.

OUGD406 - Studio Brief O - Research

Paayal, Pete and myself decided to research some existing record sleeves. Here are a few examples of what we've found. I like the layout of the books and these books grabbed my attention so I wanted to create something similar to mine to be eye catching and original.

OUGD406 - Studio Brief 01 brief and task

Today we were set our first live brief which involves designing a 7" album cover that will be entered into the competition Secret-7. We are to choose a song out of 7 possible candidates on the website and create 5 visuals which will eventually be lowered to one final outcome that will be sent to secret-7.

After being briefed we were given the task to work with others around our class and listen to the chosen 7 pieces around secret-7 and produce work that would be passed on to other people.

All of our work put together on the wall in our study room.
