Alphabet Soup brief

Alphabet Soup  Design Skills Studio brief one.

We have just been given our first module which involves creating our own typeface. Whilst working from our previous powerpoint (about ourselves) we now must use the font we chose and create a new typeface. Also known as lettering.  We have to create a significant body of possible ideas. A set of 10 letterforms that should be represented in a 10x10cm format.

Thinking about type (OUGD403)

Thinking about type.

Today we had our second module briefing which was about typography.
Soon after we were separated into groups to discuss a random generated word to help further our brief.

Placid.

- Excited. Fun, boring, dull, not upset and sensitive.
- Quality. Surfaced, expensive, thoughtful
- Small. Short, thin.
- Calm. Composed, organised, easy, careful, rested.
- Simple. Clean, straight, timid, plain, clean.
- Natural. Nature, pure, beauty, trees, plants, forests, symmetrical, danger, animals.
- Static. Movement, still, love.
- Chaos. Snap, unclear, dark, complexed, fast, momentum, problematic, scary, insecure, crazy.
- Peaceful. Content, quiet, sun, light, serene, accepting, water, lake, secure, natural.
- Sans Serif. Subtle, smooth, equal, simple, legible, precise.

Feedback from powerpoint presentation (OUGD403)

After presenting my powerpoint I was given some feedback with constructive criticism.

The first criticism was that I could try making my sentences more legible as it was being blocked by my background. I was also told that it was a better presentation because it was very personal to me. At the end of the powerpoint Simon said that he hoped that my choice of font would be Serif because everything linked with my presentation was mainly serif based.

Overall, I was very pleased with my presentation because it was very personal and almost told a story of who I am which was the target.  I hope to see more tasks like this to build our confidence and help us speak out more.

About me - (OUGD403)

Powerpoint Presentation.

Who am I?
My name is Daniel Carter but my preferred name is Danny. I am 19 years old and I am a fun, energetic and easily approachable person. I love my family and friends and treat them with a lot of respect and care. I am an honest and reliable person who people tend to come to for a advice.

When are you happiest?
I am most happiest when i go visit my family in Poland. My granddad was my second dad who sadly passed away nearly two years ago. I love going to visit my grandma because it makes me smile to see her smile. She is a warm and loving character who I see as the definition of perfect. I hope to visit her soon as well as my cousins and aunties.

What is your greatest fear?
I am worried that I will not be able to support my family in the future. I hope to start my own family in the foreseeable future and I hope I can bring them up as well as my parents have.

What is your happiest memory?
My happiest memory was meeting my Godfather for the first time since I was a little baby. He decided to come surprise me and the family back at home in London and he was nothing what I expected. (Please view powerpoint to see further details)

What was your most embarrassing moment?
My most embarrassing moment was the day I dyed my hair from black to blonde and red back in 2010. At the time I thought it would be cool to experiment with my hair and do something that would attract attention. Looking back at those years I had no idea what I was talking about and clearly didn't have a good sense in fashion.

What makes you unhappy?
Unhappy people make me unhappy. People who are always miserable and love to start arguments. I don't see the benefit of someone shouting at someone else when clearly there are other ways that can resolve the argument.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?
I wanted to become a professional footballer. I've been a massive Manchester United fan since I was 4 and always looked up to people like Paul Scholes, Ruud Van Nistelrooy and many others. It has always been my hobby and I hope to continue playing football even though it is too late for me to become a professional.

What is my guiltiest pleasure?
Eastenders. I have been watching Eastenders for over 6 years and even when episodes are boring and dull I will always end up coming back to watch more. I hate the idea of me missing an episode.

What is your favourite hobby?
Football. I love football with a passion and I can't see myself ever getting bored with it. I have been playing football for a local club called SloaneFC who I love playing for as well as spectating. I hope to help out the football team in as many ways as possible in the future. I would also love to become a regular starting first team player.

Where is your favourite place?
Last year I visited Prague and Amsterdam with 6 other friends. After walking around pointlessly for roughly 3 hours I witnessed the most amazing architecture I could imagine. The buildings are so beautiful and full of vibrant colours and even made me think of Poland. Amsterdam is another beautiful peaceful city. The lakes and parks are beyond explanation. The beauty of nature and the beauty of the buildings are incredible. I hope to return to both of these if I were to ever go travelling.

The font I have chosen is Times Roman. It is a very simple and efficient typeface which reminds me of the typeface used for Eastenders, consisting of serifs which are easily seen. Times Roman was originally used for newspaper in 1931 (the times). Times Roman was changed to Times New Roman in order to try modernise it. The letters which I noticed that had the most difference were mainly R,P and Q. Times New roman is a monotype font which is made by pressing paper against a surface that is set with individual characters. Whilst, Times Roman is a linotype font which is produced by a machine. The main difference between the two is mainly the spacing.
